The Price of Hair Isn’t What You Think It Is

how much does a professional hair color and cut coast

Recently, celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton made headlines discussing the reality behind a $200,000 celebrity styling fee. At first glance, people hear that number and think…“Wow. He pockets $200,000 for doing hair.”

But then he broke it down:
💰 roughly 50% taxes
💰 20% agent commissions
💰 5% business management fees
💰 travel
💰 expenses
💰 time away from home

And suddenly the number looked VERY different.

Using his own example, a $200,000 job could realistically break down something like this:
✅ $200,000 gross fee
➖ minus approximately $100,000 in taxes
➖ minus approximately $40,000 in agent commissions
➖ minus approximately $10,000 in management fees

Leaving roughly: $50,000 before additional business expenses and travel costs. That means his actual take-home could land somewhere around: 25% of the original headline number.

And that’s before:
💲 flights
💲 hotels
💲 assistants
💲 product
💲 shipping kits
💲 insurance
💲 unpaid travel time
💲 downtime between bookings

It reminded me of a conversation I had years ago while on a work trip with my husband. A woman casually told me she stopped going to a professional colorist and started having her husband do her hair because she realized her stylist was “just taking $90 out of her pocket and putting it into hers.”

I remember sitting there thinking how many people truly don’t understand what it costs to operate a service-based business. So I gently explained, “That stylist is not taking home $90.”

What clients often don’t see are the layers underneath the appointment:
✅ rent
✅ utilities
✅ color products
✅ foils
✅ gloves
✅ booking systems
✅ continuing education
✅ taxes
✅insurance
✅ laundry
✅ cleaning
✅ credit card processing fees
✅ business expenses
✅ years of experience

Not to mention the physical demand of doing hair professionally for years on end.

The number a client pays is not the number a stylist keeps. Not even close. And I don’t say that defensively. I think most people simply have never had to think about the math behind running a business.

If you’ve never worked independently or owned something yourself, it’s easy to assume the service price equals pure profit. But every business has overhead and hair is no exception.

The “Price Per Wear” Of Hair

What’s interesting is we rarely apply “cost per use” thinking to beauty services. But maybe we should.

If someone spends $375 every 8 weeks —> that breaks down to about $6.70/day

At 12 weeks —> about $4.46/day

At 16 weeks —> about $3.35/day

For something you wear every single day, hair becomes part of nearly every moment of your life. It’s there at work, in photos you’ll look back on for years, during dinners out, school pickup lines, vacations, celebrations, and the quiet everyday moments in between. It shows up in major life milestones and in simple interactions most people never think twice about. The way your hair feels has a way of shaping how you move through all of it.

We all know good hair amplifies your outer aesthetic. But it also impacts confidence, ease, identity, and how you move through the world.

Expertise Is Often Invisible

One of the interesting things about hair is that when it’s done really well, people assume it was easy. A seamless blend, soft gray transition, natural dimension, or a haircut that falls into place effortlessly can make the skill behind it almost invisible. But what clients are really investing in is the years of education, experience, refinement, and problem-solving it took to create results that feel natural and wearable in real life.

And of course, everyone gets to decide what matters to them financially. That’s personal. But I also think transparency matters, because behind every appointment is a real business, real overhead, and real human energy sustaining the work.

At Linmay Studio, we believe great hair should feel lived-in, effortless, and supportive of your everyday life. Whether you’re coming in for dimensional color, gray blending, healthy hair support, or simply a more intentional salon experience in Evanston, our goal is always the same: thoughtful work that grows out beautifully and helps you feel more like yourself.

Because when you really think about it, hair is something you wear every single day. And feeling good in it matters.
